Abstract

    Are you interested in the Semantic Web and, more particularly, would you like to learn how to build your own ontology? Briefly, an ontology is a structure composed of relationships and vocabulary that most often revolves around a particular domain. Today semantic web ontologies are being used in a number of fields including knowledge management, natural language processing, e-Commerce, database design, education, bio-informatics, intelligent integration information and information retrieval. More specifically, you will be introduced to why and how ontologies are being used today in the domains of finance, education, government and health.

    In this tutorial you will be introduced to the semantic web with the focus on analyzing, designing and implementing ontology for your own use within an organization or university setting. After designing a practical ontology, we will implement it by using the tools RDF, RDF Schema, and OWL.

    Finally we will review and evaluate some of the most important open source and commercial ontology development tools in use today.

    This tutorial is for anyone who wants an introduction to semantic web modeling and a comprehensive and concise understanding of how to analyze, design and implement a semantic web ontology


Biography of Presenter

    Dr. Dan Dunne has been involved with computers and programming ever since he took his first FORTRAN class in 1961. A graduate of Purdue in Electrical Engineering, in the past 45 years he has worked for numerous companies including Westinghouse Baltimore Aerospace Division, Hughes Aircraft, Aerojet Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Intel, Interwoven, and numerous other Silicon Valley companies doing consulting, writing and training. In the course of his career, he has written more than 50 books including many other software and hardware training guides.

    Dr. Dunne has taught at numerous universities including UCLA. In 1995 he was the first to design and teach Internet classes in Los Angles to over 4000 people. The following year he designed and wrote the first Java class taught in California that was sequentially used as the first Sun Microsystems Java class.

    Presently Dr, Dunne spends his time consulting, teaching, and writing in the semantic web ontology space for companies and colleges and is in the mist of writing his book entitled “A Practical Methodology for Designing and Implementing Real-World Ontologies.”
